CPL-33 Western Regional Vice President
Prior to becoming a member of AFGE and the Council of Prisons Locals-33, Joe Velazquez had been a member of several different Unions to include PORAC, COPS and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He now serves 16 Locals within his region throughout California, Arizona and Hawaii. The Western Region is comprised of 15 institutions which vary in security levels from low women’s camps to high security United States Penitentiary’s. The western region consists of 2 Federal Corrections Complexes which are amongst the largest and in the United States. Joe began his Law Enforcement career when he became a sworn Police Officer in Riverside County, California in 2002. Prior to entering into Law Enforcement Joe worked as a Contract Negotiator and Regional Manager and trainer for an International Corporation. Joe believes that Unions are the life-blood of our nations labor movement and he strives to grow our membership through staff representation. Joe now concentrates on making our prisons a safer workplace for all of our brothers and sister who put it all on the line every day they step into work with some of the world’s most dangerous inmates.
